What is AEO — and why does it matter now?

AEO (answer-engine optimisation) is the work of getting your business named and cited in the answers AI assistants give. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Google’s AI Overviews for “the best X near me” or “which tool should I use for Y”, the engine composes one answer and names a handful of sources. If you’re one of them, you win the customer before they ever see a list of blue links. If you’re not, a competitor does. Our plain-English guide, What is AEO?, covers how it differs from traditional SEO and where to start.

How do you get an AI engine to cite you?

Lead with a direct answer, structure the page so machines can parse it, and give engines reasons to trust you. That means answer-first paragraphs, question-shaped headings, structured data, an llms.txt file, and mentions on the third-party pages AI engines already trust. The playbook in How to get cited by ChatGPT walks through each step, and llms.txt & schema, explained simply covers the technical foundations without requiring a developer.
